Continental Drift-
Is the theory that one super-continent eventually separated and drifted apart, forming into the seven continents we have today. In the 1900's Alfred Wegener noticed that the continents seemed to fit together.
For example, fossils of the reptile mesosaurus are only found in southern Africa and South America. Mesosaurus, a freshwater reptile, could not have swum in the Atlantic Ocean.

Example of Boundaries-
Himalayas: Convergent between continental-continental collision of Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. Andes Mountains: Convergent between oceanic-continental collision of Pacific plate beneath South American plate. Aleutian islands: Convergent between oceanic-oceanic collision of Pacific plate beneath North American plate. Hawaii: Formed from a Hot Spot in the Pacific Plate, its consisted of five connected volcanic mountains that were built by this lava plume rising from the mantle. The Mariana Trench:Formed when two oceanic plates converge, one subducts beneath the other and forms a Trench. Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Is formed because the North American and Eurasian Plates are moving away from each other. |

Plate Tectonics- Plate tectonics is the theory that explains the movements of the Earth's lithosphere that have formed the landscape features we see across the globe today. There are three kinds of plate tectonic boundaries: divergent, convergent, and transform plate boundaries. A divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other, at divergent boundaries, oceanic crust, made of basalt, is created. A convergent boundary is when two plates come together and can result in: continental mountains, ocean trenches, volcanic mountains, volcanic islands, and arcs. Transform plate boundary's are when two plates are sliding past each other, usually resulting in earthquakes. |
